Czech ENvironmental Information Agency (CENIA) is an organisation of Ministry of Environment that gathers, evaluates, interprets and distributes information about the environment. CENIA also assesses the best available technologies (BAT). BAT means the most effective and advanced stage in the development of activities and their methods of operation which indicate the practical suitability of particular techniques for providing in principle the basis for emission limit values designed to prevent and, where that is not practicable, generally to reduce emissions and the impact on the environment as a whole.
The BAT technology evaluation is based on the technical level of the device, especially regading the emissions to air, water and soil, the amount waste production, material and energy demands, instruments for environmental management, economic capabilities of the operator of the device, while reaching regional environmental standards.
Evaluation of the aerobic fermentation technology in EWA reactor
The aim of the analysis was to evaluate the technology of controlled thermophilic aerobic fermentation in the EWA reactor regarding impacts on the environment, BAT, ETAP and current legislation demands. Another aim od the analysis was to assess whether it is an eco-innovative technology.
It follows from the evaluation, that the technology is in compliance with BAT and it is an eco-innovative technology with minimal operating costs appropriate to be used in many localities. Given, the possibility to employ more fermenters in series up to the operators needs, it is a very variable device with a widespread use.
The device finds it use in places with built infrastructure and in places where the waste is being processed. This will maximize the use of an affected area.
The device output is a product for energetic purposes. So, it is an material recovery of waste and biomass. This is in compliance with criterion about supporting the recovery of waste and materials used in the technology (CENIA 2010).

The analysis of the technology of controlled thermophilic aerobic fermentation in terms of impacts on the environment. It follows from the evaluation, that the device is in full compliance with BAT (Best Available Technology) and it is an eco-innovative technology, that can be run in lots of places with minimal costs (CENIA 2010).
